Have you checked out Facebook’s Audience Insights yet?
To be honest with you, I avoided it for a while. I popped in there when it was first rolled out. I got ridiculously overwhelmed and closed that tab faster than you can say “affinity.” (What does that word actually mean, Facebook? Because I see you throwing it around in Audience Insights like it’s your job.)
Maybe you’ve had the same experience. Or you haven’t had the time to even dip your toe into this massive ocean of data.
Guess what? Today’s the day – for both of us. I made you an 8-minute video to help you accomplish one and only one thing with Audience Insights: to find more interests for you to use in your ad targeting.
You’re going to want to use this technique if:
- none of the businesses you want to use in your targeting show up when you try to add them in the Power Editor
- you’ve already saturated your audience with ads and, as a result, sign-ups to your list are getting more and more expensive
- the only interests you can think of to include in your audience are very big names. Lots of other people are targeting Marie Forleo and Amy Porterfield, so that makes your own ads cost more to run.
Let’s see how to find more interests for our target audience, shall we?
Now take 5 minutes, head over to your Ads Manager and dig around inside Audience Insights!
Oh this is really great. Thank you
You’re welcome Malaika!
Awesome tips Claire! Thanks for the video run down.
Thanks for watching, Hector! Hopefully you’ll find some awesome ideas in there too. :)
Great Post Claire I struggle with this all the time and my ads cost me an arm and leg because I’m targeting the high traffic pages.
It happens to all of us, Janet, at least anyone targeting business owners. When prices started to jump in July I basically freaked out, but I’ve been able to work on my targeting and copy to bring my cost per conversion down significantly. Best of luck with your ads!
This is a great training Claire! Thank you so much for sharing this. I just learned a ton!
Thanks Fabiola! I was so confused by this stuff when Audience Insights first came out that I’m glad you were able to take away so much from it. :)
Thank you for sharing it Claire this was really helpful :)
Are there ways for me to see which the interests I’m targeting are the ones I’m getting slammed for? Also, I saw you had a very long talk on not boosting posts-I’ll watch that when I can, but now that organic reach is almost 0%, we’ve got to find a way to reach our audience with all the free content (I’d be VERY happy with just our fans for the free content that isn’t directly about selling)-mostly videos-that is a very important part of our long term trust/value-building plan. Do you still advise against spending small amounts of money to boost those types of posts that are about the long-term game? Can’t see how else our posts can reach people anymore.
Hey Michael, sorry for the delay, just finished a week of traveling!
Check out this post for advice on boosting posts the right way: https://clairepells.com/promote-blog-posts/
As for figuring out which interests are costing you the most, the only way to really do it is to use one interest at a time. Ideally you’d run more than one ad set with the exact same ads, each ad set targeting one interest. You’ll see quickly which ones are converting and for how much. Does that make sense?
Just watched this, and it’s brilliant! I was getting really high frequency and had run out of ideas, I feel like now I can go back and fine tune everything.
great video! we wrote a similiar post that could help beginners with audience insights. http://www.fissionads.com/university/facebook-audience-insights-101/
